“So once again, the mystery man of politics gets his own way and his own country.”
I cannot recommend George Will’s column in the Washington Post, enough.
Obama to the nation: Onward civilian soldiers
The armed services’ ethos, although noble, is not a template for civilian society, unless the aspiration is to extinguish politics. People marching in serried ranks, fused into a solid mass by the heat of martial ardor, proceeding in lock step, shoulder to shoulder, obedient to orders from a commanding officer — this is a recurring dream of progressives eager to dispense with tiresome persuasion and untidy dissension in a free, tumultuous society. — READ MORE
It makes sense now. The anti-military Obamas, who once kicked back with Pentagon bombers, radically changed their tune after landing in the White House. With her husband installed as Commander in Chief, Michelle Obama now asks us to imitate the military’s “selfless service” and talks often of being “inspired by their sacrifice” to the country:
“I have spoken with so many military spouses who are raising their kids alone while their loved one is stationed overseas for months at a time. I have heard from so many wonderful military children who pick up extra chores, and just step up and keep their grades going while mom or dad is away.
“And I’ve been inspired by the survivors of our fallen who keep giving back to the community day after day,” she told military families gathered at the White House Wednesday, where the children viewed two Christmas trees decorated in honor of military families.”
When our government starts replacing Jesus with military symbols on Christmas, it symbolizes something.
Obama has mentioned more than a few times his wish that he could bypass the legislative process and pursue, unfettered, what he thinks is good for the nation. George Will reminds us that this is a long-held desire of progressives, who see the Constitution as an impediment, and who view the founding fathers in the way that self-centered teenagers view their elderly grandparents.
It’s a model that has been tried before. It’s not a good omen.
